Retiring Oclist.exe

Posted by chrisbeams on October 29, 2010

From the server core blog

For those of you that used Server Core in Windows Server 2008 you may be familiar with the Oclist.exe tool. This tool was included in Server Core to provide a way to obtain a list of roles and features on Server Core and their installation state. In Windows Server 2008 R2 a new tool, Dism.exe, was introduced for adding/removing roles and features and included the capability to provide the list of roles and features as well as installation state by running:

Dism /online /get-features /format:table

In the Server Core documentation we changed to using Dism.exe for Windows Server 2008 R2. Because Dism.exe is an integrated command line tool for all tasks related to optional roles and features and provides additional formating options for its output, in the next release we are planning to remove Oclist.exe from Server Core.

Windows Server Core Configurator V 2.0

Posted by chrisbeams on July 30, 2010

Just noticed this on Jorge’s blog and is something that i think helps ease the pain and concern around using Server Core. Basically its an enhanced version of the codeplex application for Windows 2008 R2 Server Core called Windows Server Core Configurator.

You can manage computer settings, control panel settings etc from a GUI on a Server Core which has no GUI 🙂

Installing OCS 2007 R2 on Windows 2008R2

Posted by chrisbeams on June 23, 2010

If you try and do the install it will fail (or appear to do nothing) on installing :

“The Windows Media Format Runtime is required in order to install this component. Installing the WMFR may require a system restart to complete the installation. Click OK to continue with the installation”

To get round this (but only in a test lab) you can do the following:

pkgmgr.exe /ip /m:”%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Media-Format-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.6001.18000.mum”
